Feed Technology
We define Feed Technology as the application of physical, chemical, biochemical and biological scientific principles and engineered technologies to increase nutrient utilization of feeds and fodders in animals through optimized feed processing unit operations and mill management. The content of our academic Feed Technology Minor and our hands-on practical Feed Technology & Mill Management Traineeship Program is designed on the basis of this definition.
Feed Technology Minor
The Feed Technology Minor is a unique academic specialization program for Iowa State University undergraduate students. The Midwest is one of the largest feed production and grain processing regions in the world. Feed manufacturing is also a global business with a growing demand for qualified professionals in science, technology, engineering and management including value-added processing, animal science and nutrition, feed science and safety, quality assurance and control, operations management, commodities trading, and agribusiness. The Feed Technology Minor requires 15 credits and must include at least 9 credits that are not used to meet any other department, college, or university requirement. Below is the list of required courses.
TSM 3220 | Preservation of Grain Quality | 3 |
or ABE 4690 | Engineering for Grain Storage, Preservation, Handling, and Processing Systems
TSM 4550 | Feed Processing and Technology | 3 |
TSM 4570 | Feed Safety, Ingredient Quality and Analytics | 3 |
ANS 3200 | Animal Feeds and Feeding | 3 |
or ANS 2190X | Survey of Animal Nutrition
ANS 3240 | Food Processing for Companion Animals | 3 |
Total Credits | 15 |
The core courses of the Feed Technology Minor (TSM4550, TSM4570) take place at the ISU Kent Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex and utilize the quality lab, pilot plant, grain center and feed mill tower for hands-on practicals.
For more information, students should contact their academic advisor, or Dr. George Obeng-Akrofi, Faculty Coordinator of the Feed Technology Minor (georgeo@iastate.edu).
Graduate Students: The core courses of the Feed Technology Minor are also offered for graduate credit:
TSM 5550 | Feed Processing and Technology | 3 |
TSM 5570 | Feed Safety, Ingredient Quality and Analytics | 3 |
Graduate students should contact Dr. Dirk Maier (dmaier@iastate.edu) regarding TSM5550 and Dr. Gretchen Mosher (gamosher@iastate.edu) regarding TSM5570 for information about the required semester research projects in the respective courses.
Undergraduate and Graduate Research and Capstone Projects
The quality lab, pilot plant, grain center and feed mill tower are state-of-the-art facilities designed to support undergraduate and graduate research projects as well as capstone projects in science, technology, engineering and management.
Graduate students and their major professors should contact Dr. Dirk Maier (dmaier@iastate.edu) regarding graduate and faculty research projects. Undergraduate students and their advisors should contact Dr. George Obeng-Akrofi (georgeo@iastate.edu) regarding undergraduate research and capstone projects.
Feed Technology and Mill Management Traineeship Program
The Feed Technology and Mill Management Traineeship Program is a unique opportunity for students from different majors including animal science, ag and biosystems engineering, ag and industrial technology, agribusiness and other majors to work, learn and earn. Trainees are selected for a multi-year opportunity to be connected with national feed and grain industry companies who support their experience through donations, mentorship and career connections.
